Analysis of the characteristics of laser metal welding

Apr 18,2023 | TOPTEK

One is contactless. Laser welding reduces stress on metal parts. Due to the laser's accuracy and uniform pulse energy, heat input is also minimal.

The second is the seam quality. Laser welding produces strong welds that can even be hermetically sealed. Using shielding gas, our machines control discoloration and eliminate secondary operations - for a marketable weld appearance.

The third is that there are no fillers and consumables. Unlike other methods, laser welding requires filler metals, including TIG, MIG and ARC, welding and brazing. Apart from shielding gas, you don't need nozzles, tips, electrodes, rods and other consumables.

Fourth, it is easy to automate. We integrate software-controlled automation into our laser welding machines, allowing parameter changes to be fast and predictable.

The fifth is flexibility. We design welders to accommodate many different part sizes and shapes, while optical configurations allow for variations in working distance. Robotic integration is also a simple process thanks to our compact head design and fiber optic delivery.

Metal laser welding method:
One is heat conduction welding. Welding is carried out in the molten metal pool behind the moving laser, using conduction welding, conduction welding, energization welding, etc. Beam pattern and focal length have an effect on weld aspect ratio, but in general lead seams are wider and shallower than keyholes.

The second is keyhole welding. The plasma created by the laser evaporating molten material before welding allows the laser to penetrate deeper. By precisely controlling the speed and energy of the laser, deep and narrow welds without pits can be produced. Laser keyhole welding has a much higher power density than conductive welding.

The third is laser spot welding. This method uses guided welding or laser keyhole welding techniques. Single-pulse, multi-pulse or perforation laser technology can be used, single-pulse, multi-pulse or perforation laser technology.
